This restriction on the use of default subroutine arguments
was added intentionally by the committee -- at a meeting I missed.
(I was fast asleep in Singapore instead.)
The people have spoken on this issue, and I would like to withdraw
it from further consideration as an erratum.

I think the final sentence of LRM-159
"Note that default values are only allowed with the ANSI style
declaration."
may have added an unnecessary restriction on the use of subroutine
default arguments.
