Dave, I thought your suggestion of using a virtual interface to reference a ref port in an interface to access a design variable was very clever, if a bit cumbersome. It chains together two of the limited pointer mechanisms in the language to get the pointer mechanism required. I note that ref ports have the same restrictions that "ref static" task arguments would have, which is part of why this works.
